TDS Hardcore Guide: How to Beat Hardcore Mode

Updated for v2.4.0 (Story Mode) · Wiki data checked August 3, 2026

This TDS Hardcore guide covers everything you need to clear all 45 waves of Hardcore Mode: the Level 50 entry requirement, how the Gem reward formula actually scales, which towers our tier list rates S for this mode specifically, and how to survive the Void Reaver on the final wave. Quick answer: bring Farm and Commander for your economy and buff slots, then fill the rest with Accelerator, Engineer, and Golden Minigunner or Ranger for damage — all five are S-tier picks for Hardcore Mode on our tier list.

Hardcore Mode Entry Requirements

Hardcore Mode requires Level 50 to unlock, and you access it through the Hardcore Elevators or the Hardcore button in Matchmaking — it isn't available from the regular difficulty select screen. Unlike every other core mode, Hardcore Mode is capped at 3 players (solo, duo, or trio); it's one of only two modes in the game with no 4-player option. Consumables are disabled entirely, and each run has a hard 40-minute time limit to clear all 45 waves.

Starting cash scales down as your squad grows, per the Fandom wiki: solo players start with 900 Coins (1,000 with the group bonus modifier active), duo starts at 750 (850), and trio starts at 600 (700). Playing solo gives you the most starting cash per player, but also means covering every choke point yourself — most Hardcore guides on the wiki and in the community agree duo is the easiest player count to balance economy against coverage.

How Hardcore Mode Rewards Work

Hardcore Mode is the only core mode that pays out Gems instead of Coins for completing waves. The reward formula scales non-linearly with how far you get: it stays fairly low through the first 30-35 waves, then climbs sharply as you approach Wave 45, plus a flat 250-Gem Triumph Bonus for a full clear. A complete 45-wave Hardcore run nets 400 Gems, 400 Exp, and 350 Tower Exp total, per the mode's official reward listing on the wiki — which lines up with the 400-Gem figure in our own Gems guide.

Beating specific mini-bosses along the way also unlocks one-time badge rewards: defeating the Void Brute (Wave 33) grants the Knight badge, the Void Keeper (Wave 36) grants Zealot, and the Void Swordmaster (Wave 43) grants Ronin — each pays Coins, a Mid Grade Crate, and Time Scale Tickets. Beating the Void Reaver itself on Wave 45 unlocks the Paragon badge, worth 750 Coins, a High Grade Crate, 2 Time Scale Tickets, and 100 Gems on top of the mode's normal Triumph reward. Shrines also start appearing from Wave 11 onward, re-appearing every 10 waves, so keep an eye out for the bonus buffs they offer.

Best Loadout for Hardcore Mode

Our tier list tracks mode-specific ratings, and the following towers are all rated S tier specifically for Hardcore Mode — not just for solo play. Build around Farm and Commander first, then add damage towers based on what Coins or Gems you have available.

TowerCostRole
Farm2,000 CoinsEconomy — funds every other tower on this list.
Commander4,000 Coins20% passive firerate buff plus Call to Arms, essential for squeezing more DPS out of a small loadout.
Accelerator2,500 Gems~474 max DPS single-target burst — the best tower for cracking boss HP pools quickly.
Engineer4,500 GemsSentry army scaling; strong sustained DPS that doesn't need constant reinvestment.
Ranger12,000 CoinsStun-immune splash damage (875 + 375 at max) plus a team range buff.
Gatling Gun35,000 Coins~744 max DPS for clearing dense mid-game waves before bosses hit.

If you have the Coins to spare, Golden Minigunner (50,000 Coins, no placement limit) and DJ Booth (5,000 Coins, range and discount buffs) round out a 7-8 tower loadout well. Check our best loadout guide for full slot-by-slot breakdowns across every mode.

Wave-by-Wave Threats

Hardcore Mode introduces new enemy types on a fairly steady schedule across all 45 waves. HP values below are from our verified enemy database, cross-checked against the wiki's Hardcore Mode page:

Wave IntroducedEnemyHP
Wave 1Odd13
Wave 4Hefty50
Wave 8Mandrake100
Wave 10Phantom70
Wave 21Voidling2,500
Wave 22Void Reaper2,250
Wave 30Void Titan27,500
Wave 42Void Knight75,000
Wave 44Void Guardian150,000
Wave 45Void Reaver1,200,000

Beyond raw HP, watch for boss-tagged waves that break the normal difficulty curve: Blighted appears on Wave 19, Mandragora on Wave 26, and Void Titan on Wave 30 — all three hit noticeably harder than the surrounding trash waves and are worth saving an ability or two for. The jump from Void Titan (27,500 HP) to Void Knight (75,000 HP) and Void Guardian (150,000 HP) in the last five waves is where most undergeared loadouts fall apart, so make sure your single-target damage is fully upgraded before Wave 40.

Beating the Void Reaver

The Void Reaver is the final-wave boss on Wave 45, with 1,200,000 HP and immunity to Health Regen. Its signature attack, Cursed Blade, slashes forward in a straight shockwave that applies a 100% Fatigue Debuff — a 40% DPS loss — plus a 20% Scared Debuff, both lasting 8 seconds. Towers caught close to the Void Reaver when it attacks take doubled debuff values, so spreading your damage towers out along its path (rather than clustering them at one choke point) reduces how many of them get hit by a single shockwave at once.

Because the debuff cuts your DPS rather than dealing direct damage, the fight is really an economy and positioning check: if your loadout was strong enough to clear Void Knight and Void Guardian on Waves 42 and 44 without major losses, you should have enough sustained DPS left to grind through the Reaver's HP pool even while debuffed. Defeating it unlocks the Paragon badge and, if you triumph the mode overall, unlocks access to Voidcore Mode — the tier above Hardcore.

FAQ

What level do I need to play Hardcore Mode in TDS?

Level 50, according to the Tower Defense Simulator Fandom wiki (checked August 3, 2026). Hardcore is capped at 3 players (solo, duo, or trio) — it's one of only two TDS modes that doesn't support a 4-player squad.

What does Hardcore Mode reward instead of Coins?

Gems. A full 45-wave clear pays 400 Gems, 400 Exp, and 350 Tower Exp per the wiki's mode infobox — consumables are disabled and the run has a 40-minute time limit.

How much HP does the Void Reaver have?

1,200,000 HP, per our verified enemy database (sourced from the Fandom wiki). It's immune to Health Regen and its Cursed Blade attack applies a stacking Fatigue debuff that cuts your towers' DPS by 40% for 8 seconds, doubled if towers are hit up close.

What is the best loadout for TDS Hardcore Mode?

Our tier list rates Accelerator, Engineer, Golden Minigunner, Commander, Farm, Ranger, DJ Booth, and Juggernaut S tier specifically for Hardcore Mode. A core setup of Farm for economy, Commander for the firerate buff, and Accelerator plus Engineer for single-target burst damage covers most of the 45-wave gauntlet.
